National Adoption Month: K is for…

#NationalAdoptionAwareness Month.

K is for #Kinds of Adoption

When a birthmother is beginning her placement journey, she is first asked what type of adoption is she looking for, as there are different types of adoptions. The three most common are Open Adoption, Semi-Open, and Closed. Open adoption is when the birthmother choses the future parents of her child and can receive pictures, phone calls, facetime, emails, and visitations with the placed child. Semi-Open Adoptions are adoptions where the birthmother has limited contact with her child and adoptive parents, such as pictures and cards. The birthmother though may not know where the adoptive family lives and all communication may go through a third party such as the adoption agency. Close adoptions are when the bithmother has no contact with the child and does not know anything about her child. Close adoptions were the most common adoptions from very early times and clear up into the 1980s. Open and Semi-Open adoption agreements became a little bit more known in the late 80s and early 90s, and currently open adoptions are the most common adoption agreements.
